How Age Is Calculated

Age calculation seems straightforward — subtract your birth date from today — but the details matter. Different countries, legal systems, and cultural traditions handle it differently, especially when months have varying lengths or when a birthday falls on 29 February.

The Completed-Years Method (Used in India)

India follows the completed-years (Western) system for all official purposes — passports, Aadhaar, voter ID, school admissions, and legal age verification. Under this system, you "turn" a new age only on your birthday. A child born on 1 June 2020 is 4 years old until 31 May 2025, and turns 5 on 1 June 2025.

How This Calculator Works

Age = Reference Date − Date of Birth
Broken down into completed years, remaining months, and remaining days

The calculator handles month-length differences correctly. If your birthday is the 31st and the current month has only 30 days, it borrows from the previous month. For leap year birthdays (29 Feb), the calculator counts your age normally and notes the next valid birthday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Subtract your date of birth from today's date. The result gives years, months, and days. For precision down to seconds, factor in the current time of day. This calculator does all of that automatically.
Indian government documents (passport, Aadhaar, voter ID) use the completed-years method based on the Gregorian calendar. Your age is the number of full years elapsed since your date of birth as recorded on your birth certificate.
No. If you were born on 29 February, your age still increments every year. In non-leap years, your birthday is legally treated as either 28 February or 1 March depending on jurisdiction. The age calculation itself remains the same.
Chronological age is time since birth — what this calculator measures. Biological age reflects how your body actually functions, influenced by genetics, diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Two people with the same chronological age can have very different biological ages.
Yes. Use the "Reference Date" field to set any date instead of today. The calculator will show the age difference between your date of birth and the reference date you choose.
